Lahaina Pali West is a rugged 5-mile trail that goes from Maalaea to Ukumehame and part of the ancient King’s Trail. It is not considered a hike that many novice hikers should consider due to the rocky mountain slopes and the length.
Both trailheads are accessible from Honoapiilani Highway (30). The eastern trailhead lies 2.5 miles south of Wailuku Town via an unimproved road adjacent to the junction of Kuihelani Highway (380 and Kihei Road(31).
Both trailheads are close to sea level and the trail gains approximately 1600 ft. in 2.5 miles, then descends back toward sea level for another 2.5 miles.
Along the way you will be able to enjoy great views of Kahoʻolawe and Lanaʻi, ancient petroglyphs, and whales in season. Sunset views over the ocean are worth having your camera on hand.
Be sure to bring plenty of water.
