Also known as Ka`iwa Ridge Trail, Lanikai Pillbox is one of the most popular hikes on the island of `Oahu drawing thousands to walk along the paths and enjoy picturesque views of the East side of the island.
Tucked in a residential neighborhood, the trail head to Lanikai Pillboxes is unassuming compared to the views you can enjoy during the hike. The unpaved path may seem easy but the hike is ranked at an intermediate level hike due to the constant incline and parts that are have rockier footing.
After hiking for nearly thirty minutes, you will come upon the first bunker or “pillbox” where hikers gaze into the Pacific Ocean and breath in the warm Hawaiian air. Mokulua Island, Kaneohe Bay, Chinaman’s Hat, and Makapu`u Lighthouse can be seen from here.
Many turn back after reaching the first pillbox while others continue on to hike to more pillboxes. After passing the first pillbox, the hike does become more intense and some parts must be hiked by holding a climbing rope. The entire hike will take around 2-hours round-trip depending on speed and ability.
There is no shade on the hike so remember to wear sunscreen and pack protective clothing.
