Mauna Kea Beach

Kaunaoa Beach also known as “Mauna Kea Beach” is considered one of the best beaches in the United States and quite possibly the best beach in all of Hawaii, depending on who you ask.

This near-perfect crescent of sand leading to calm water is home to one of the oldest hotels on the island. Mauna Kea beach hotel was built after Laurance Rockefeller visited the islands. After a swim in the bay, plans to build a resort began.

Mauna Kea state beach is a public beach, but beachgoers have to pass through the hotel gate in order to gain access. Just let the gate guard know you are going to “the beach” itself to get in. One can get a free pass and map from the security office at the entrance of the hotel.

The beach is ideal for family relaxation or just a solo day to the beach. On the site there is also standup paddle boards for rent. The golf course around the hotel is well manicured, scenic and full of sunshine year round.

Amenities include showers and bathrooms. Waiulaula Beach and Mau’umae Beach are two small pockets of white sand within walking distance north of this beach.

Almost certainly the best beach for peaceful, serene, quiet, relaxation on the big island of Hawaii.
