Mauna Kea State Park is located at the base of Mauna Kea at 6500-foot elevation along Route 200 more commonly known as Saddle Road. From the park there are good views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
Wild pigs and sheep can be hunted in the area although there is a military installation in the area so be careful to read up on the rules before hunting.
There is a road that takes you up Mauna Kea, however half way up the road, the pavement ends and you will need a 4×4 vehicle to complete the journey.
There are guided tours for anyone wanting to go to the summit. You just need to arrive at the Visitor Information Station, by 1:00 p.m. for the Escorted Summit Tour, or between 6 and 10 pm for Stargazing.
